Chapter 14

I headed back to the warehouse under the guise of going back to get some work done at The Love Shack. After all, the warehouse that had been set on fire was practically on the way. Most of the crowd had dissipated by now, and things were looking all in all fairly normal.

The smell of smoke still hung thick in the air, and I shivered at the memory of the flames lapping at the exterior of the bakery that I’d seen just the day before. As I got closer to the warehouse, I was grateful there was currently no tenant, and that no one else had to see their home and their life’s work go up in flames. Sure, it sucked for the elf who owned this place, but presumably he would have had insurance on the building, and it wasn’t as if his entire life depended on the building still being standing.

Unlike the bakery, the warehouse hadn’t been completely sealed off by the Enforcers. I supposed the abandoned building was far less interesting to passersby, of which there were far fewer at this end of town to begin with, and the Enforcers hadn’t deemed it necessary to use magic to prevent access.

Therefore, I walked up to the large door at the front, which had been burned to a crisp, and peered inside. Sure enough, there were no signs of anyone or anything having been inside the building. The interior walls were made of thin metal sheeting, much of which had begun melting. There was no way that would have ever happened with a regular fire in the human world, adding confirmation that witchfire was responsible for the blaze.

“Hey, you there! What are you doing?”

I started at the sound of the voice and turned to find myself facing an obvious wolf shifter. His long face and deep-set eyes gave that away instantly. Middle-aged with brown hair graying at the edges and a little bit of paunch, the shifter carried himself with an authority I’d only seen in Enforcers.

“I was just passing by on the way to the office,” I said with a shrug. “Who are you?”

The shifter moved closer toward me. “I’m the acting Chief Enforcer in this town, and I ask the questions. What’s your name?”

“Mina Tiller.”

The shifter stared at me for a minute, obviously trying to get the cogs in his brain to work, then he realized where he had heard the name.

“You’re Eva Sornik’s new granddaughter, the one who grew up in the human world.”

“That’s me.”

“Well, I don’t know how they do things over in the human world, but here in the paranormal world, we don’t take kindly on people just having a look at crime scenes.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude,” I replied. “I was just curious. I’ve never heard of witchfire before yesterday.”

“Yes, well, it’s nasty stuff. It won’t go out like regular flames. You have to use magic, which is why we have wizards in the fire department to take care of it. I’m sure one day one of the witches will show you how to get rid of it.
